Introduction

This workshop offers a practical and reflective exploration of how psychotherapists, particularly those in training or early in their careers, can navigate the realities of working within a clinical setting. It addresses professional identity, managing interpersonal dynamics with colleagues and managers, and recognising when to refer a client on. Emphasis will be placed on emotional regulation, ethical communication, and aligning personal values with clinical responsibilities. Drawing from supervisory experience and clinical leadership, the workshop aims to support
therapists in managing themselves with integrity and clarity within organisational structures.

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate professional conduct and communication within multidisciplinary and hierarchical clinical settings.
2. Recognise common interpersonal and emotional challenges in organisational life and apply strategies for self-regulation and reflective engagement.
3. Identify when client presentations exceed personal competency or scope of practice, and articulate clear, ethical rationales for referral.
4. Understand the importance of supervision, collegial feedback, and team dynamics in supporting ethical and effective psychotherapeutic work.
