Certificate in Child and Adolescent Counselling and Psychotherapy

Deepening qualified counsellors’ / therapists’ knowledge, skills and competencies in counselling children and adolescents

  • Award: IICP Professional Certificate in Child and Adolescent Counselling & Psychotherapy.
  • Cost: €950.00 (€807.50 for IICP Diploma/BA Alumni or qualified VCS counsellors). €60 application fee also applies.

  • Starting: Sunday 05 November 2017

  • Duration: 10 full teaching days (Sundays), 20 hours of peer group discussion. Requirement for 50 hours of supervised clinical work to achieve the award.

Introduction

The aim of this programme is to facilitate counsellors and therapists in furthering their knowledge and experience of counselling children and adolescents. This programme will focus on an integrated model for counselling minors and will include a placement component.

Programme Duration

There will be ten full teaching days and 20 hours of peer group discussion. There is also a requirement for 50 hours of supervised clinical work to achieve the award. Candidates have a full calendar year in which to complete the clinical requirements.

  • Assessment of minors
  • Use of the CORE YP Form/Beck Youth Inventory
  • Including families in the counselling process
  • Contracting with children and parents
  • The child’s internal process of change

2. SPICC Model of Working with Minors:

  • Overview of the process of child counselling
  • Person Centred Therapy Interventions
  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy  Interventions
  • Gestalt Therapy Interventions
  • Behaviour Therapy Interventions
  • Play Therapy Interventions
  • Reality Therapy Interventions
  • Narrative Therapy Interventions
  • Use of Creative and Child Specific Therapy Material and Resources

3. Other Specific Issues:

  • Developmental Psychology
  • Abnormal Psychology
  • Child Protection Issues
  • Grief Work with Children
  • Dealing with Transference and Resistance
  • Issues in Adolescence
  • Personal Development and Reflective Work

4. Course Assignments:

  • Group Project
  • Theory Essay
  • Supervision Report & Self-Evaluation of Supervision

 

Course Structure

  • The core ethos of IICP is to provide a student centred, warm and supportive learning environment.
  • The programme is highly interactive, experiential and taught through lectures, small group work, video and role-play.
  • Learners on this programme will be registered with a MyAthens password and username so that they have access to EBSCOs online psychological and behavioural science journal collection.

Note: Attendance at all training days is necessary to qualify for the award of the Certificate.

Entry Requirements:

  • The course is open to counsellors and psychotherapists, counselling psychologists and/or clinical psychologists, or those with a recognised clinical qualification in the helping profession.
  • Applicants must have experience of working with clients therapeutically and under supervision.
  • Learners will demonstrate an ability to engage in self-directed learning

Award:

  • IICP Certificate in Child and Adolescent Counselling & Psychotherapy.

Cost:

  • €950.00 (€807.50 for IICP Diploma/BA Alumni or qualified VCS counsellors).
  • An additional application fee of €60 also applies.
  • Deposit payment of €285 is required to secure place on course.
  • Additional costs include clinical supervision, as well as books and play therapy material.
  • Payment Plan options are available.
