Programme Content
The purpose of this module is to increase knowledge, competencies and skills related to abnormal psychology, with emphasis on mental health issues that clients may present with in therapy.
Course Content
This module aims to familiarise learners with classified disorders (DSM-V) and discern mental health issues from a psychological perspective. Learners will evaluate the limits of their competence and recognise when to refer for specialised treatment. Learners will also examine cases where cross-referral between psychiatric, psychological and therapeutic services have been beneficial in meeting the needs of the client. This module includes the following:
- Exploration of the DSM-V classifications of mental health issues;
- Case study approach to exploring mental health disorders;
- Exploration of the role of psychiatry within the context of mental illness;
- Understanding historical and contemporary debates in mental health issues;
- Benefits of counselling and psychotherapy when working with clients who have been diagnosed with mild to severe mental health issues; and
- Boundaries and limits of therapy when working with severe mental health issues.
Written Assignment
Learners are required to write a 2,500-word essay, using current literature, on a chosen disorder from the range explored in the module. Learners will critically reflect on aetiology factors and debates, demonstrating awareness of treatment interventions and the role of counselling and psychotherapy. Critical reflection on therapeutic relationship dilemmas and issues of risk and risk management should be included. Learners will link theory to practice, demonstrating clinical judgement skills relating to best practice and optimum care with this client group.
