Introduction

To introduce practicing non-drug specialist counsellors and psychotherapist to the broad theories and practices surrounding in current drug and alcohol interventions. Engendering a deeper understanding and enhancing ability to assess and support client and recovery.
Learning Outcomes

  • The participant will have comprehensive knowledge of common psychoactive drug types, effects and means of administration.
  • Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the Biopsychosocial Model of understanding Addiction and its application in practice.
  • The participant will display an understanding of the evidence informed approaches used in current use.

Course content:
Day 1 – July 26th Saturday
Pharmacology of commonly misused drugs
Update on recent trends in substance usage
Means of Administration and its implications for therapists
Continuum of drug consumption and its application

Day 2 – July 27th Sunday
Health issues associated with drug use
Theoretical Models of Addiction
Introduction to Biopsychosocial Model of Addiction
Family Support and drug use
Evidence based Psychotherapeutic approaches to recovery

About the Programme Facilitator

Dr. Noel O’Connor
Dr. Noel O’Connor is Head of Academic Studies at IICP College, and lectures across several programmes, including the 1st year of the BSc in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, one of the final year BSc cohorts, and the 2nd year of the MSc in Pluralistic Counselling and Psychotherapy.
As a key academic leader within the college, Noel plays an integral role in shaping curriculum and supporting student development across undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His extensive experience in the field of psychotherapy and academic research informs his dynamic teaching approach and his ongoing commitment to excellence in education and clinical training.
